(The Magi sings) When I first saw the star In the mid-winter dark There was wind in the trees Snow in the breeze When I first saw the star (The Shepherd sings) When I first heard the sound All the Powers around Seraphim all in light Dominions take flight When I first heard the sound Mother of God The favorite love The silence above you Mother of God (The Betrothed sings) When I first had the dream The eternal mystery A caretaker’s life For the holiest wife When I first had the dream Mother of God The favorite love The silence above you Mother of God (The Theotokos sings) When I first saw your face Orient is your name You must be who you are A sword in my heart When I first saw your face Mother of God The favorite love The silence above you (save us who love you) O Mother of God

Upstate New York Far from the city We walked through the quiet streets Late one Christmas Eve The mountain in silence Over the river Snow fell through the pine trees Late one Christmas Eve My only friend was there with me When the Queen of Heaven was suddenly In the cold and the silence Far from the family We spoke in whispers Late one Christmas Eve In the dark, we wandered Along the river With the sound of the quiet Late one Christmas Eve My only friend was there with me When the Queen of Heaven was suddenly I thought of the Fire The Temple and Ladder The Gate and the Garden Late one Christmas Eve I thought of a virgin The star in the darkness What her hands were weaving Late one Christmas Eve My only friend was there with me When the Queen of Heaven was suddenly And my only thought was “woe is me” When the Queen of Heaven suddenly The mountain in silence Over the river Snow fell through the pine trees Late one Christmas Eve

Who’s afraid of the Virgin Mary? Who’s afraid of the Virgin Mary? Everyone should be. Everyone should be. Everyone should be. Everyone should be.

about

It is the Christmas season and these songs are reflections on the person of Mary, the mother of Christ. She is not typically reflected upon in much of sacred choral music in the Christmas season. That is a shame. These songs then are simply an attempt to consider her in a more personal way. I wish you all a merry Christmas.
